Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
