Large-scale Russian Attacks Cut Power Across Ukraine's Capital

Power facilities under attack in Ukraine
Ukraine's energy systems have faced escalating attacks in recent weeks

Overnight, Russian missile and drone strikes have caused blackouts in large parts of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.

A number of civilians were wounded while residents in eastern districts were experienced blackouts and dealt with problems to water supplies, per reports from city officials.

Meanwhile, a seven-year-old child was fatally injured in a different Russian drone strike in the Zaporizhzhia area in the country's south-east, as reported by local officials.

Moscow has intensified assaults on energy facilities over the last fortnight, while the country's government has called for "concrete actions" from international partners to increase pressure on Moscow.

"The necessity is not symbolic gestures but decisive action - from the America, the EU and the Group of Seven - in delivering air defence systems and implementing sanctions," he wrote in a online statement.

Authorities reported that numerous aerial vehicles and over thirty missiles attacked the country's power systems, describing such attacks as "premeditated" and against "everything that sustains normal life" as temperatures become colder.

The energy minister said Russia was "launching a major assault" and maintenance teams were laboring to fix the damage.

A series of attacks hit energy infrastructure and apartment buildings in the capital.

Several of the people hurt in the assaults on the capital have been transported for medical care, as confirmed by city authorities.

Regional authorities said the metropolitan region came under intense attacks throughout the evening. A minor was killed and three other people were injured.

The assaults follow nights of aerial attacks in the area, parts of which remain under the control of Moscow's military.

The entire country is on alert for advanced weapon attacks, which are tougher to spot.

Authorities told the media that Russia was intentionally trying to demolish the country's energy grid, with attacks already impacting energy systems.

Officials stated utility staff and government agencies were anticipating additional strikes.
