No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
